You probably think of the months from September through January as fall and winter, and obviously, you’re not wrong. I, however, prefer to think of the chilly half of the year as denim season. Forget pumpkin spice lattes (I’m kidding, I would never), the second the temperature starts to drop below 80 degrees, I’m pulling my jeans out. The right pair of jeans has the ability to transform my look and my confidence—that’s why I’m the first to get on board with the denim trends for fall and winter of 2023. I’ll be sipping my pumpkin spice latte in style.
I’m relieved to report that baggy denim is still the denim to be wearing in the fall and winter of 2023. Sorry skinny jeans, you’re not back in style just yet (though I’m sure the time will eventually come). While you can still wear a simple pair of baggy jeans, the trend has taken on new formats for a fresh fall look. Carpenter jeans and balloon pants are two of the newest trendy silhouettes to join the baggy jeans family. Both styles are the epitome of cool comfort, so there’s really no excuse not to give them a try.
If you’re already a street style expert, you’ll know that denim skirts have already been a major trend for 2023. You can expect to see the polarizing style continue to dominate your Instagram feed this fall and winter but with a twist. A-line silhouettes and midi hemlines are joining the denim skirt trend group chat.
Another controversial trend to make the shortlist—or should I say “jort list”—are jorts. A jort can be defined as a pair of long denim shorts and whether you like it or not, the cool kids are wearing them. If you need outfit inspiration, I recommend searching for pictures of Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid in the short style.
And finally, you can’t have a successful fall and winter denim season without a rendezvous with a Canadian tuxedo. Pair your favorite denim jacket trend with your denim skirt or jeans for a not-so-formal ‘fit.
Keep reading for the top 10 pieces you need to nail the denim trends for fall and winter of 2023.

Carpenter Jeans

You want your outfit to work right? And by work, I mean werk. Whether you’re headed out for a day of manual home improvements (unlikely) or want to borrow from the workwear aesthetic (probable), carpenter jeans are the cool pants to wear this fall. The style is meant to look lived in—think baggy fit, tattered hemlines, and plenty of functional pockets. Carpenter pants are the perfect style for the big pant-tiny top outfit formula. Throw on a simple black tank, a pair of black kitten heels or sneakers, and a statement bag, and call it a look! All in a day’s work.

BDG Baggy Carpenter Jean

Ok, cool girl, I see you in your baggy BDG carpenter pants. I love this pair of jeans because of the attention to detail in their design. The wash is slightly overdyed which gives them a worn look, the denim is soft without being too stretchy, and the stitched detailing on the pockets and seams adds dimension.

AE Curvy Super High-Waisted Baggy Wide-Leg Cargo Jean

The carpenter jean silhouette is great because it can be worn low or high-waisted. This pair has a super high-waisted fit and then loosens up through the thighs.

Balloon Jeans

Balloon pants are the denim equivalent of parachute pants and let me just say, they are incredible. The purposefully balloon-like silhouette of fabric that curves out from the hip and tapers back in at the ankle is chic, comfortable, and the easiest way to elevate even the simplest of outfits. A balloon jean is like a baggy jean but with purpose. You may think the style looks a bit silly now but I guarantee you by the time November rolls around, you’ll be buying a pair.

Tibi Sid Jeans

I officially have a crush on these Tibi jeans. I want to wear them to a trendy bar, to the office, and to every event on my calendar for the next 12 months. They are definitely an investment piece but I have a feeling I’ll get my money’s worth.

We The Free Barrel Jeans

If you like a low-rise jean and want to participate in the spectacular balloon pant trend, this denim option from We The Free is for you. The cut of these jeans is baggy but the hemline is slightly cropped which makes them a great option to wear with ballet flats or sneakers.

Maxi Skirts

Denim maxi skirts were the “it” item of the spring and love ’em or hate ’em, they aren’t going anywhere. This fall and winter, be prepared to see the maxi skirt take shape and transition from a pencil style to an A-line silhouette. A maxi skirt, denim or not, is one of the best items to wear with knee-high boots so while you’re shopping for one, make sure you’ve got the other ready.

Wash Lab Denim Midi Skirt

This denim number may be a midi skirt but it has maximum impact. I love the raw hemline and the asymmetrical cut.
-
Mango Denim Skirt

This denim maxi skirt from Mango almost has a mermaid-like design to it with the split seams. This skirt would look great with a white linen blouse and brown leather boots for a fall look.

Jorts

Yes, you read that right: jorts are fashionable. Just a few years ago, the style was exclusively worn by Adam Sandler, now you’ll see jorts outside of every trendy New York City restaurant and in street-style photos of celebrities like Hailey Bieber. The key to wearing jorts is balance. Pair them with a frilly top or heels to off-set the inherently grungy energy jorts exude.

Denim Longline Board Short

BDG makes some of my favorite jeans and that’s why it’s the first brand I’d consider when trying a pair of jorts. Take styling notes and pair these with crew socks and Adidas Sambas.

Levis ’90s Women’s Shorts

Jorts are also a particularly useful trend for fall because they work well with transitional weather. You can easily wear jorts with a chunky oversized sweater on chilly days or wear them with a wool bomber jacket. This pair by Levi’s is a little bit more fitted for a polished take on the trend.
-
Canadian Tuxedo

Dare I say that I saved the best trend for last? I am considering a Canadian tuxedo my official fall uniform—it’s my favorite outfit to put on when I don’t know what to wear. The look always manages to be both casual and polished. Plus, there are so many different ways to wear them. Go for a monochromatic look by matching the denim washes or switch things up by mixing light and dark denim. There are no rules in the land of Canadian tuxedos.

Madewell Denim Shirt-Jacket

I have this denim shirt jacket from Madewell and can confirm that it is one of the most worn pieces in my closet. I love wearing it with denim shorts or jeans but also frequently wear it with a linen maxi skirt or slacks. Versatile!

Madewell Denim Vest

A denim vest can be styled so many different ways which is why it should be considered a trend, but an essential! This vest can be worn with jeans for the Canadian tuxedo look or layered over a blouse or sweater in the colder months.
